English Curriculum Changes
The new national curriculum for Key Stage 3 will be taught from September 2014 onwards.
However, most of the current curriculum has now been disapplied, so schools have the option of adapting their schemes of work to reflect the new curriculum now.
Key changes
  • No levels: “…it will be for schools to decide how they assess pupil’s progress.”
  • Speaking and Listening: replaced with Spoken English.
  • Writing: greater emphasis on planning, drafting, editing and proofreading.
  • Grammar, spelling and vocab: students will need to apply and extend their knowledge from primary.
Curriculum Aims
All pupils should:
  1. Read easily and with good understanding
  2. Acquire a wide vocabulary and an understanding of grammar
  3. Write clearly, accurately and coherently
  4. Use discussion in order to learn
  5. Be competent in the arts of speaking and listening
What's not changing?
  • Shakespeare: one play is still compulsory
  • Students will still be asked to study ‘other types of language'
  • Literature has not changed as much as initially thought: ‘wide’ and ‘high-quality’ but no prescriptive authors
Effect on GCSEs
The new KS3 Programme of Study is more rigorous, essentially to help students progress easily between KS3 and GCSE. It is expected that GCSE will be more rigorous as well.
PROGRESSION CHART
We've developed a clear set of guidelines for assessing how far a student, or group of students, can demonstrate evidence of achievement in reading and writing year by year.
