How we teach OCR A Level History effectively using Hodder Education resources

“Having a resource with model paragraphs broken down to see the function of each line is fantastic”

"We teach the Early Tudors for our British period study and enquiry, using Hodder Education’s OCR endorsed textbook England 1485–1603. We did really well in the exams last year and achieved 100% A*–C, as was expected. With a different level of cohort for 2017/18, we’ve been using
the textbooks to support the lower end and to help move the C students to B students.

The textbooks have been incredibly useful for our planning, especially as I haven’t taught anything like the synoptic unit before. All of the students have a copy of the textbook and we ask them to read the relevant section before class, so they have background knowledge. We also set questions and students answer them using the textbook.

We like the fact that the OCR textbooks blend really well with the Access to History series, which is used extensively in our school. We use Access similarly to a textbook and having a resource with suggested questions and model paragraphs broken down to see the function of each line
is fantastic. Access to History is  good for the top end, with more extensive reading and longer text for making notes.

We also use the Modern History Review print magazine and digital Magazine Archive. All of the students have logins for the Archive and we spend a couple of weeks doing research online. This meant that our coursework last year was amazing; I was really pleased with it. Of the 14 sources that the students are required to obtain, around one third tend to come from Modern History Review magazine.

I also think that My Revision Notes are excellent – we bought a copy of every one that matched the curriculum. Having skills-based learning on every page was brilliant for the Early Tudors and Civil Rights in the USA (the skills-heavy modules). These revision guides gave me the materials I would have ordinarily got from past papers."
