Find out what Philosophy has taught John Sprague about life and why he loves teaching Theory of Knowledge.

John Sprague is one of the authors of Theory of Knowledge for the IB Diploma.
Risk-Taker
One thing Philosophy has taught me is that every decision we make is a risk - you just have to put yourself out there, make the best decision you can and move forward.
Working with IBDP students reminds me of this every year – all the decisions they make will push them into new, challenging and (hopefully) rewarding futures.

Knowledgeable
I've been teaching TOK and IB Philosophy for 17 year and I discover new elements of both every year.
Whatever you think about TOK or Philosophy in general I find that teaching it to teenagers is the most rewarding elements.  They bring out new ideas and approaches every day.

Inquirer
One reason why I love teaching IB Philosophy and TOK is the opportunity I have to reinvent the courses depending on whatever I happen to be researching.
I've been rebuilding my knowledge of epistemology most recently and am keen to incorporate elements of that learning into the courses.

Balanced
Having spent time in school senior management, I've now returned to the classroom full time...
...and am very much aware of the pressures individual teachers and administrators are under.  My writing and thinking about TOK are informed by both sides of the equation.
Caring
One of the most enjoyable elements of my work is working closely with my students as a teacher and as a 'sixth form tutor'.
My tutees are both IB and British A Level students, which highlights many aspects of the IBDP which might have been forgotten in schools with single pathways.
