Welcome to Richard Bell, a Ph.D. student at Stanford University. He studies popular politics and religious culture in early modern England, with a particular emphasis on prisons as sites of communication and exchange. Although only in the early stages of his teaching career, he hopes to contribute from the perspective of someone whose path has been defined by a passion for history ignited in the secondary school classroom.
a Ph.D. student at Stanford University. He studies popular politics and religious culture in early modern England, with a particular emphasis on prisons as sites of communication and exchange. Although only in the early stages of his teaching career, he hopes to contribute from the perspective of someone whose path has been defined by a passion for history ignited in the secondary school classroom. In his first post, Richard relates some prison riots from the 17th century and considers what they might tell us about prison life in the 1600s.
