A year to celebrate people’s action to sustainably manage the world’s forests. The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.
Here's a map from
Worldmapper of the amount of forest area/distribution in each country in 2005. You can find more maps about forest gains and losses in '
Not out of the woods yet' on Ben's blog,

Of Forests and Men
Nice video from the UN: Yann Arthus-Bertrand was appointed by the United Nations to produce the official film for the International Year of Forests.
Tree photos
It's the perfect excuse for me to include some nice photos of trees. One of my favourite photographic subjects!
Here's a photo of hanami, blossom viewing at Southwark Cathedral, with the Shard in the background. (Click on the photo to visit my blog with a larger version of the photo.)

The Tree Year
I found a great project called
The Tree Year, which asks participants to observe a tree or shrub throughout the year. It would make a good project for pupils. Follow
