Summary:
The events leading up to the Civil War are part of one of the most intensely studied periods in British history. This book considers the domestic and foreign policies of James I and Charles I in the years between 1603 and 1640 and asks if civil war was inevitable by 1640. One feature of the period which has previously been neglected is the "British" aspect, and events in Scotland and Ireland are considered in detail. The book includes an account of the period, a selection of source material, chronological tables and summary flow-chart diagrams, and a survey of the most recent scholarship on the subject.
